I am sure you have all been told how hard it is to lose weight especially if you are over 40, but this doesn't have to be true if you don't let it; we have to do something different if we want different results, as it is sheer madness to expect different results if we keep doing the same things over and over again.

The secret is to have a new approach to weight loss for the over 40 by concentrating on our thoughts and how we perceive ourselves, working from the inside out. The first think we must do is to learn to love ourselves and be ready for change, because unless we are truly ready to make that change, we are fighting a losing battle and any weight we manage to lose we will put back on, and the chances are with some extra on top.

Start with asking yourself why are you not losing weight, is it because you are alone and frightened to start a relationship and being overweight gives you the excuse not to start one, is it because the children have all left home and you feel you are no longer needed so you console yourself with comfort eating, or is it because you are frightened of doing something new and are hiding behind the fact that you are overweight so you can't do it? Think hard and be honest with yourself.

This might all seem rather strange to you and not relevant to weight loss for the over 40, but you are wrong as most weight problems are in the mind and are especially relevant when we reach 40 and beyond. Most of us are very familiar with midlife crisis which very often manifests in significant weight gain.

Think positive! Affirmations can prove to be extremely powerful & effective. Set yourself goals, write them down - be specific! How much weight do you want to lose and by when. The secret is to set yourself short-term goals as this will seem a lot easier to achieve.We seek pleasure and avoid pain - if we associate more pain than pleasure with dieting, we will definitely fail. So when you reach your first goal you will feel good about yourself and ready to achieve your next one.

Focus on the details. Imagine yourself at your ideal weight - how you look, what you're wearing, what your hair looks like, your posture & how confident you feel in the body of the new Slim you. You can make the difference on whether you lose weight or gain it. Do you pick the muesli for breakfast or the chocolate croissant? Do you take the lift or use the stairs? Small changes = BIG results
