How to Make a Fabric Travel High Chair

    • 1). Select two kinds of fabric to make the travel high chair --- one for the front and a contrasting fabric for the back. Lightweight fabrics like denim, cotton or corduroy work well for this kind of project.

    • 2). Lay a piece of tissue paper on the table to create the pattern pieces. Cut a piece for the waist strap that is 36 3/4 inches by 6 1/2 inches. Cut a second piece for the seat that is 18 3/4 inches by 11 1/4 inches. Cut a final piece for the connector strip that is 4 1/4 inches by 3 inches.

    • 3). Find the center of the waist strap, the connector piece and the seat by folding each piece in half. Draw two small lines 2 1/4 inches apart in the center of each piece to help with placing the connector piece when the seat construction begins.

    • 4). Lay the two pieces of fabric on the table. Place the pattern for each piece on top of the fabric, and cut out each piece.

    • 5). Cut one piece of Velcro that is 5 inches by 2 inches. Round the edges of the Velcro with scissors so that no sharp points exist.

    • 6). Lay the two seat pieces together with the front of the fabric facing inward. Start at the first connector mark, and sew the two pieces together using a sewing machine. Work around the seat fabric until you reach the second connector mark. The space between the two marks should be left open.

    • 7). Lay the two pieces of fabric for the strap together as you did with the seat fabric. Start at the connector mark again, and sew the two pieces of fabric together, ending at the second connector mark. Turn both the strap and seat pieces right-side out and iron to flatten all seams.

    • 8). Sew the connector piece using a top stitch on the sewing machine. Start the stitch about 1/4 inch from the edge. Insert the piece into the space that was left open on the seat fabric. Pin it into place using straight pins. Insert the other end into the open space on the strap. Pin it into place.

    • 9). Sew the connector strip into place using a top stitch. Start the stitch about 1/4 inch from the edge of the fabric, and continue it around the whole edge of both the strap and the seat.

Pin the rough piece of Velcro to the outside of the strap. Place the smooth piece of Velcro on the inside of the strap, and secure it with straight pins. Center both so they line up together. Sew each piece of Velcro into place using a sewing machine or with a needle and thread. The stitching should be around the entire edge of the Velcro.
