Manuka Honey Treatment
- Manuka honey treatments are different from standard honey treatments because Manuka contains not only hydrogen peroxide, but also methylglyoxal, a plant-derived antibacterial agent. Also, Manuka honey is much more stable than regular honey. Once standard honey comes in contact with a wound, the enzymes in the skin cause the honey to begin losing effectiveness. Manuka honey is still effective even when in contact with these enzymes, heat and light. Manuka is also used to treat strains of bacteria that are unresponsive to antibiotics.
- You can use Manuka honey to help fade scars caused by acne or injuries. The honey promotes tissue growth. It is best to use the Manuka when the scar is relatively new. Smear 2 tsp. active Manuka honey onto a piece of sterile gauze. Place the gauze over the scar and use medical tape to secure it in place. Change the dressing every 12 hours or so for about 3 weeks.
- Manuka honey can also be used to soothe infectious skin conditions such as ringworm and athlete's foot. The anti-inflammatory properties help relieve redness, itchiness and puffiness, while antifungal agents help eradicate any fungal infection. Because Manuka honey is just that--honey--it can be used on young children with poison ivy rash, ringworm, insect bites, blisters and sore throats. However, keep in mind that medical professionals advise against giving infants under one year any type of honey orally.
- Manuka honey is known for the treatment of microorganism infections as well. It helps kill the microorganisms that cause E. coli, Staph, salmonella poisoning and strep throat. If you are suffering from any of these ailments, visit a doctor before trying any treatments on your own. However, ingesting a couple of teaspoons of Manuka honey a day has been known to help fight these illnesses.
- Other skin ailments such as eczema, acne, dermatitis and wrinkles can be treated by applying Manuka honey directly to the skin. Manuka honey comes in many different forms for the treatment of varying skin problems. You can buy Manuka honey acne creams, antiseptic sprays, liquid hand soap, hand sanitizer, anti-wrinkle serums and pain relief cream. However, you can also simply buy Manuka honey on its own, making it easy to either ingest or use topically.
You can often find Manuka honey in supermarkets in the honey aisle. However, if you want a specific product, such as antiseptic spray or acne cream, you can find them online or in health stores.
