How to Shade With Ink
- 1). Sketch an outline of the picture on quality drawing paper with a pencil. Trace the lines of the pencil with a pen. Erase the pencil lines. Retrace and thicken the lines of the object to form darker, shaded areas. Only trace the pencil line once in areas that will be lightly shaded.
- 2). Draw parallel lines and contour lines to form the first layer of color. Parallel lines are straight lines that go in the same direction. Contour lines follow the curvature of the object you drew. Darker areas of the picture should have many parallel and contour lines. Lighter portions of the picture should have few parallel lines and contour lines.
- 3). Create the next layer of shading with crosshatching. Work on the lightest part of the picture first. Lightly press the pen on the paper to make crosshatches, intersecting lines from two different directions. Draw darker lines to form dark, shaded areas.
- 4). Shade more of the picture with stippling. Stippling is a grouping of ink dots. For lighter areas, apply a little pressure to the pen. Space the dots. For darker areas, apply more pressure to the pen and group the dots closer together.
- 5). Blend ink colors together with light strokes. Overlap the shading techniques in different colors.
