How to Stain and Paint Concrete Floors
- 1). Line baseboards, walls and anything which should not be stained with blue painter's tape, attaching plastic wrap. Secure the extended edge to the wall with painter's tape.
- 2). Paint the edges and corners of the floor with stain, using a paint brush. Fill the garden sprayer with stain, and spray the main surface of the floor. Use the broom as a large paintbrush to spread the stain. Let dry according to manufacturer's instructions. If desired, repeat to deepen the color or improve coverage, and let dry. Important note: Spray the floor evenly and avoid overlapping areas of stain which will produce dark seams.
- 3). Fill the large bucket with water and add 1/2 cup baking soda for each gallon of water. Mix thoroughly and pour on the dry floor. Use the broom to scrub the entire floor, edges and corners. Vacuum the stain residue while the floor is wet.
- 4). Rinse the floor with water and continue to scrub with a broom to loosen stain particles. Continue to vacuum residue, and repeat rinsing, scrubbing and vacuuming until the water is clear. Let the floor dry for a day.
- 5). Apply a thin layer of sealer to the edges and corners. Continue the application in the main area. Let dry according to manufacturer's instructions. Repeat to apply a second thin coat of sealer and let dry.
- 6). Allow the sealer to cure for two days.
- 1). Line the baseboards or vertical edges of the floor with painter's tape.
- 2). Apply a thin coat of primer to the floor edges and corners using the paint brush. Apply primer to the main area using a paint brush or roller. Allow the primer to dry according to manufacturer's instructions.
Repeat to apply a second coat of primer and allow to dry. - 3). Repeat the process outlined in Step 2 using epoxy paint instead of primer to evenly apply two coats to the floor. Make sure the paint is thoroughly dry.
- 4). Repeat the process in Step 2 using masonry sealer instead of primer to apply at least two coats to the floor. Make sure the sealer dries between coats. After the last coat is applied, allow the sealer to cure for at least two days.
