How to Use the 1040X Form
- 1). Gather any new tax information (W-2s, 1099s) along with the tax return you filed previously.
- 2). Fill in the basic information in the header such as name, address and Social Security number. Add the requested amounts from your original return in Column A of Form 1040X.
- 3). Recalculate your taxes using tax forms and software for the appropriate year. If you are amending a tax return for the previous year, use forms and software for that year.
- 4). Fill in the new amounts in Column C of Form 1040X, "Correct Amount."
- 5). Find the difference between the two amounts and list this in Column B of Form 1040X, "Net Change."
- 6). Fill out "Part II: Explanation of Changes" with a brief explanation of your reason for filing an amended return. This explanation can be as short as "received corrected W-2" or "omitted credit in error."
- 7). Attach any revised forms or schedules to your Form 1040X, along with copies of any new W-2s or 1099s. Make sure you make a copy of everything for your records.
