How to Make a Fabric Covered Waste Can Basket
- 1). Use a tape measure to get the dimensions of the trash can or bucket being covered. Measure from rim to rim going under the bottom of the can. Add 6 inches to the measurement.
- 2). Use the scissors to cut a circle of fabric. The diameter of the fabric circle should be the same size as the measurement taken in Step 1. Use the scissors to cut the elastic to the same size as the can's rim.
- 3). Fold the edge of the fabric under by 1/2 inch. Sew all of the way around the circle with the sewing machine. Fold the fabric under 2-1/2 inches--and this time--sew all of the way around except for a 1-inch opening.
- 4). Fasten the large safety pin in the elastic. Insert the pin into the opening in the folded 2-1/2 inch seam. Feed the elastic through the folded fabric by pushing the safety pin through. Make sure the free end of the elastic does not slip into the opening or it will be necessary to start the elastic a second time.
- 5). Sew the elastic ends together. Sew the opening gap closed. Slide the cover over the bucket or trash can basket. If using a bucket instead of a standard trash can, just tuck the bucket handle inside of the cover. It won't show under the puffy fabric cover.
